The Entry from Nynehead
Calor Somerset Village of the Year 2008

Judges' Comments on the entry from Nynehead Parish Council.
The judges are pleased to be declaring Nynehead Parish Council winners of the competition award for Environment.
Nynehead is a dispersed community of 370, proximate to the large towns of Wellington and Taunton. Nynehead Parish Council confidently strive to cater for the needs of the communities of these local towns as well! The Parish Council have an exceptional relationship with the residential facility for the elderly and the wide community provision generously provided by the management of this "big house".
The judges were inspired by Nynehead Parish Council's achievements in harnessing community skills and energy in developing the environmental and cultural assets of the parish.
The community is proud of its footpaths and grateful for the high degree of co-operation and practical help provided by the farmers of the community. Quite "counter trend", two new permissive paths have been opened in the parish this year together with extensive capital works. Significant tree planting is being planned together with an hydroelectric turbine at the weir. The playing field and sports thrive and develop.
The church bells project very much impressed the judges - a long term project, now at fruition, to maintain a cultural asset and give pleasure and "place" to all in, or visiting, the community.
As well as a determination to maintain the pleasant environment provided by Nynehead Court and its grounds, Nynehead Parish Council have further encouraged a sense of "place" by its support for the Nynehead History Society and the formidable volunteer work of the (Brunel) Grand Western Canal Trust on the amazing canal "lift" present in the parish.
